Nick began his fellowship with a focus on clarifying his messaging and gaining some traction on Summit stages and at intimate luncheon events. At his first Summit flagship, he introduced the Summit community to the power and potential of rank choice voting, through a dynamic participatory game and a mainstage keynote you can view here:

The Voter Formation Project is dedicated to increasing participation in local, state, & national elections through digital communication, experimentation, & knowledge sharing. VFP fills a significant gap as the sole digital-only, Black-led organization to focus on year-round, ongoing pro-civic engagement messaging to communities of color. This sustained messaging is key to bringing new voters of color into the electorate and works to push back on the disinformation campaigns that are often targeted at these communities.
With big plans to scale her reach, Tatenda began the fellowship aiming to increase the foundation of support that will allow VFP to grow. From board management to refining her brand storytelling strategy to expanding her funding pipelines for greater stability, Tatenda is focused on creating a sustainable organization with a healthy culture and the capacity to change the landscape of civic engagement.
During her fellowship years Tatenda has demonstrated remarkable organizational leadership and commitment, finding solutions to continue her work in a challenging funding cycle. Using our Summit Impact Board Structure & Governance 101 Guide as well as connections to experts in our Summit network, Tatenda has made large strides in crafting a thorough and effective board management system, and building the kind of support needed for her leadership and the growth of VFP.
To kickoff 2024, we are facilitating a Creative Brainstorm with key leaders from the Summit Community to support Tatenda and her team on inclusive and culturally relevant design. Lookout for more storytelling coming your way soon!

"Summit Impact has been a unique and powerful source of ideas, resources, and networks that have helped to inform and accelerate my work on democracy reform nationally."
This Lab is made possible by the generous support of the Goldhirsh Foundation.
The inaugural virtual kickoff on August 18th, 2022, featured three distinguished fellows: Nick Troiano of Unite America, Tatenda Musapatike of Voter Formation Project, and Isaac Saul of Tangle. Their diverse backgrounds and perspectives set the tone for what would become the first Summit Impact Democracy Lab.
In November 2022 the Fellows first converged with the broader Summit audience at Summit Palm Desert. Fellows shared their ideas on mainstages, facilitated interactive activities, and shared meaningful toasts at Impact meetups. This first gathering set the stage for continued Summit network engagement and a new sense of what might be possible with this powerful community.
July 2023 saw another milestone as Summit Impact collaborated with the Goldhirsh Foundation to host an LA Democracy Luncheon, featuring Fellow Nick Troiano and a spirited panel of speakers. One guest shared that it was the best panel he had seen of late, another shared that this was the event they had been waiting for, to deeply engage in conversations about democracy with like-minded members of the LA community.
In March of 2023 Summit Impact hosted a prestigious Washington DC Democracy Lab Dinner, in partnership with Ami Aronson and featuring Fellow Tatenda Musapatike. This high-profile event attracted leaders, visionaries, and creatives for a beautiful shared dinner and discussion, reminding us of the opportunity we have to enact the dreams of our ancestors for a resilient, equitable democracy.
As the calendar flipped to 2024, the lab continues with Nick’s book launch, Tatenda’s creative roundtable, and Isaac’s live event in New York set for April. These events promise to be exciting highlights, adding layers of impact in this significant election year.
The momentum building in Democracy Lab is an exciting indicator of what is possible for Summit Impact Fellows in the future. The shared goal of creating a more resilient, representative democracy is needed now more than ever. And the collaborative spirit and bright solutions led by current Fellows offer a North Star for how we can get there together.
